Norfolk Remodel

Norfolk Remodel
2016

A former duplex built in 1925 several blocks north of Rice University and since converted into a single family house was burdened with a labyrinthine addition dating from the 1960s. Inside it was claustrophobic and dark. The new plan stitches the interior spaces together with selective interior demolition and several carefully placed cased openings. A new bank of windows on the east side, echo those already on the west side, and new French doors facing to the rear garden bring natural light inside. All the old windows have been replaced and the brick veneer exterior walls rebuilt where they were in danger of collapse. McGarr Design collaborated on the interiors.
